"As an independent contract trainer and developer I had to fill all the roles needed. In 1997 I hired two full-time consultants and moved from independent solo trainer to lead consultant of a group of three consultants. I was the marketing department, billing consultant, account receivable department, trainer, company publicist, kept all the files, managed all the projects, "and" all the people! All this was in addition to the consultant/training load that I had carried before.
Just prior to my increase in responsibility I received an on-line article promoting "Virtual Assistants." I was interested, but skeptical, so I saved the article and fortunately never deleted it. When things got to be more than I could bear, I started down the list of VAs. There were several on the list located all over the country. Location does not typically matter since 90% of the work and communication happens via email, voice mail and web technology. During the week that I needed someone the most, I just happened to be in the same town as the person that was to bring some order back to my hectic schedule.
I did not have time to ship the work and was still a little tentative as to how well a "virtual assistant" could work out. I gave Ginger a call and she stopped by on her lunch break. After meeting her I knew I could trust her to take care of the task. We went over what I needed and within a few weeks I was billing 'my client' for a task that may have never gotten done. The project, compiling a training manual, more than paid for her time and gave me the extra edge with that client. They have been calling me ever since.
